Breastfeeding Friendly (BFF) Campaign

Research shows breastmilk is the best food for babies to prevent illnesses and encourage healthy eating habits. It is a low-cost, preventative intervention that promotes health and nutrition among children and their mothers. However, according to the California Department of Public Health, Center for Family Health, Genetic Disease Screening Program, Newborn Screening Data, in 2008 Fresno County ranked 47th out of 58 counties in California for our low number of mothers exclusively breastfeeding their babies.

Research also shows that in order to change the breastfeeding rates, moms must:

  • Make the choice to breastfeed long before baby is born
  • Be in a supportive environment of family and friends who value her decision to breastfeed
  • Be part of a community that embraces breastfeeding as a healthy choice and is supportive of breastfeeding mothers

First 5 Fresno County has chosen to focus efforts over the next few years in encouraging mothers to breastfeed their newborns for at least the first six months of life and help our community become a Breastfeeding Friendly (BFF) place for mothers.

Imagine a community where office buildings, stores, churches and all critical establishments publicly display their support for breastfeeding.

They can do this by displaying this logo at their location. At First 5 Fresno County we are confident this can happen and we are counting on community partners like you to make it happen.

Our BFF Express

All too often, when breastfeeding moms go out to an outdoor event, they are forced to go back to their cars or a public restroom stall to hide from foot traffic and noise in order to nurse their baby.

In an effort to support and encourage breastfeeding moms, First 5 Fresno County provides the Breastfeeding Friendly (BFF) Express, a customized Airstream trailer for moms at the Big Fresno Fair and at various community events. The BFF Express allows mom to participate in community events without worries about where they can breastfeed their baby. View the BFF Express in action!
