Instead of telling your toddler, "Stop that!" say, "Please get down from the chair. You might fall and hurt yourself, and we don't want that to happen."
Give a running commentary on what your child is doing. For example, say, "Thank you for picking up the book and bringing it to me."
Toddlers love choices. Try asking questions like, "Would you like carrots or green beans for lunch?"
